Student Theatre in December
MS7's MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
Like all H.I.S. student theatre, the MS7 Shakespeare production is a core curriculum experience. With the guidance of former headteacher and Shakespeare director Cate Allen, MS English teacher Joey supported our students in the daunting journey from first reading to the stage at Alderney Landing Theatre on Thursday, December 19.
In the spirit of healthy risk-taking, this stage performance includes all MS 7 students, not only those who have an existing passion for theatre. While initial auditions are held for students aspiring to a play a specific character, each MS7 student takes on at least one role.
Our Shakespeare productions are immersive, with students tackling the unfamiliar vocabulary and phrasing of the script, and even a period dance. In the weeks leading up to this year’s performance, the Olds (Grades 3 and 4 students) were introduced to Much Ado’s storyline through a puppet show prepared and performed by some of our MS7s, and Art teacher Sara helped cast members create masks for their masquerade dance number. Parents and students who attended the Identity Showcase may have glimpsed our roving, costumed cast members wandering through the exhibits.
Throughout their preparations, the MS7s were supported by the H.I.S. community – past and present! Their performance was uplifted by
- Elizabethan era-inspired outfits from our fabulous costume collection, built over many years by savvy acquisitions and volunteer seamstresses,
- Musical accompaniment from music teacher Adam Johnson and The MerryWeather Band, and
- the work of Alderney Theatre’s professional sound and lighting crew.
Thank you to teacher Tina for her support throughout the season of rehearsals and preparations. Lastly, thank you to everyone who joined us at the theatre, including a contingent of cast members from Much Ado 2021 (Class of ‘24), and to fans who tuned in to watch our livestream.
